Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young toddler. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
